Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final – Bramall Lane, Sheffield – 19th March 2023
A belter of a cup tie at Bramall Lane with much at stake. A semi-final appearance at Wembley for the winner beckoned.
Things did not start well for United when the referee was asked by VAR to view a possible penalty. After a review the penalty was awarded, and converted by Blackburn’s Ben Brereton.
United slowly but surely got themselves back into the game and equalised in the 28th minute with a somewhat fortunate goal after a shot was wickedly deflected into his own net by Sam Gallagher.
All square at half time with everything to play for.
As was the first half, Blackburn began the second half the better team, duly rewarded on the hour with a well worked goal finished by Sammie Szmodics.
United pushed for the equaliser. Then, in the 81st minute a determined run by United’s Oli McBurnie made the scores level
Into the first minute of added time a wonder strike from 30 yards by Tommy Doyle sealed the win for the home team rewarded with a semi final appearance against Manchester City at Wembley in April.
